Shocker: Power demand from US homes is falling
Posted on | September 8, 2011 | No Comments
American homes are more cluttered than ever with devices, and they all need power: Cellphones and iPads that have to be charged, DVRs that run all hours, TVs that light up in high definition. But something shocking is happening to demand for electricity in the Age of the Gadget: It’s leveling off.
Over the next decade, experts expect residential power use to fall, reversing an upward trend that has been almost uninterrupted since Thomas Edison invented the modern light bulb.

ATC’s Badger-Coulee line is unnecessary
Posted on | July 31, 2011 | No Comments
The American Transmission Company (ATC) can’t prove a 345 kilovolt line is needed in the near future between Madison and La Crosse.
It can commission studies, it can hold meetings, it can provide suggested corridors… ATC can do a lot of things, but it can’t empirically prove that adding a 345 kV line, as is proposed in its Badger-Coulee Transmission Line, is necessary.

Rochester Post Bulletin July 23, 2011
The last major upgrade of the region’s electric transmission infrastructure took place 30 years ago, according to the developers of the CapX2020 power line project.
They aim to correct that with a project that includes three 345 kilovolt power lines, one 239 kV line and various substations and lines. One of those 345 kV lines would run from Hampton through the Rochester area and on to La Crosse.
The route through Olmsted County has raised concerns from many property owners and some public officials, especially in Oronoco Township.
On Wednesday, the Post-Bulletin will host a public meeting on the project, to provide information and give the public a chance to ask questions of people who know the project well. The Post-Bulletin Dialogues event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rochester Public Library. It’s free and informal, iced tea and cookies will be available, and officials from Xcel Energy, among other interests, will participate. Managing Editor Jay Furst will moderate.
